The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. It consists of active research groups in a wide range of fields, starting from logical foundations, bridging all classical core subjects, and up to concrete applications in industry. As part of the Faculty, the Institute of Mathematics represents the entire discipline of mathematics in research and teaching, without making an arbitrary separation into pure and applied fields.

Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 20 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The advertised prae doc position is associated with the research group of Prof. Philipp Grohs (email: [email protected]). We are looking for a highly qualified researcher with special interests in the use of machine learning methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations, specifically those arising in quantum chemistry. The successful candidate is able to actively contribute to the research of Mathematical Data Science [mds.univie.ac.at] and to teach courses (2 hours per semester). The candidate will carry out personal tutoring and assist in the continuous assessment and development of the teaching programme.

Profile:
Diploma or master degree in mathematics or a related field (such as computer science, statistics, physics or chemistry), high level of competence in machine learning and numerical analysis as well as advanced programming skills.

Additional qualifications:

  • goal orientation and dedication to scientific excellence,
  • international experience preferable,
  • experience in the development and analysis of deep learning algorithms, especially in numerical analysis,
  • excellent programming skills in python and C++,
  • excellent background in signal processing.
